We’re often fielding questions at our cafe and on Twitter about the difference between products like our Home Blend and our Yirgacheffe, so we decided to share an educational post with you about where coffee comes from.
Single Origin coffees can be traced back to a region, co-op or ideally, a farm like Dukale’s. They have tastes and characteristics unique to that area and should be enjoyed like one might enjoy wine from a particular vineyard and a specific year. A blend combines various single origin coffees to create a new and unique taste profile.
Single origin coffee by nature is variable from year to year. A coffee you enjoyed from a farm one year might never taste the same again. There is a lot to enjoy from discovering new regions and their unique flavors. Many cafes today offer single origin selections as a way of allowing the customer to experience a greater variety of flavors and feel closer to the coffee and the growing process.
Blends provide taste consistency regardless of the season and availability of single origin coffees. The taste profile of a blend becomes your customer’s expected daily cup. Blends use the same quality coffee with the same certifications. For high volume clients, blends offer simplicity, consistency and better cost control. Using one of our Laughing Man home blends or commissioning a unique custom blend is usually the right direction for high volume clients.
